Athens, Georgia – Authorities have identified the suspect in the murder of University of Georgia student Laken Riley as 26-year-old Ibarra, a non-U.S. citizen from Venezuela. Despite residing in Athens, Ibarra has no known affiliation with the university. Investigators revealed that there is no indication of any prior connection between Ibarra and Riley. It was also disclosed that Ibarra has a criminal record, but it does not involve violent offenses.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Ibarra was taken into custody in 2022 for unlawfully entering the United States by crossing the border near El Paso, Texas. After being paroled, he was subsequently released for further processing. Following a hearing on Saturday, Ibarra was denied bond and remains detained.
Reportedly living at the Cielo Azulyk apartment complex on South Milledge Avenue in Athens, Ibarra was apprehended shortly after investigators were spotted conducting a search at the residence. This location is situated south of the wooded area where Riley’s body was discovered near a trail behind Lake Herrick on the UGA campus. The crime scene is within Oconee Forest Park, adjacent to the Intramural Fields and recreation complex, all of which are university facilities.
