Uvalde, Texas, where a tragic school shooting claimed the lives of 19 elementary school students and two teachers, is now at the center of a lawsuit filed by the families of the victims. The lawsuit targets Meta Platforms, owner of Instagram, the maker of the video game “Call of Duty,” and Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the AR-15 assault rifle used in the massacre.
The families allege that these companies hold responsibility for providing the tools and conditioning the shooter to see violence as a solution to his problems. Attorney Josh Koskoff pointed to the direct link between the companies’ products and the Uvalde shooting. The lawsuit, filed on the second anniversary of the tragic event, seeks unspecified damages.
The shooter, who had been playing “Call of Duty” since the age of 15, reportedly used a version of the game to practice with the same type of rifle used in the attack. The families also accuse Instagram of failing to enforce rules that prohibit the marketing of firearms and harmful content to children.
In response to the lawsuit, a video game industry trade group emphasized that there is no proven link between video games and real-life violence. They stated that baseless accusations detract from addressing underlying issues and preventing future tragedies.
Daniel Defense CEO Marty Daniels condemned the Uvalde shooting as an act of pure evil. The families of the victims also filed a separate $500 million lawsuit against Texas Department of Public Safety officers and the local school district over their response to the shooting, criticizing law enforcement’s delayed action.
Criticism has been directed at local law enforcement for hesitating to confront the shooter, potentially costing lives. More than 370 federal, state, and local officers were present during the incident, but it took over 70 minutes before they engaged the gunman.
At a press conference, attorney Koskoff criticized the lack of training and resources available to law enforcement in Uvalde. The families of the victims demand accountability for the officers who failed to act promptly during the shooting.
Efforts to seek comments from Meta, Daniel Defense, and the makers of “Call of Duty” have been made. With ongoing legal actions and lingering questions about law enforcement’s response, the Uvalde community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the tragic school shooting.
