Spirit Lake Reservation, North Dakota, was thrown into chaos on a recent Tuesday, March 4, following a tragic triple homicide that resulted in a four-hour lockdown. Law enforcement successfully captured the suspect in custody later that afternoon after conducting an extensive search.
Upon receiving the distressing news from the Bureau of Indian Affairs around 9:30 a.m., the Spirit Lake Tribe swiftly issued a shelter-in-place order for all residents within the reservation’s boundaries. This order encompassed districts such as St. Michael, Fort Totten, Crow Hill, and Wood Lake, with tribal departments also placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Local law enforcement, led by Benson County Sheriff Ethan Rode, tirelessly pursued the suspect, describing the manhunt as “nerve-wracking.” The search, involving over two dozen local, state, and federal officers, proved challenging due to the remote nature of the area with numerous side roads and secluded locations.
The manhunt concluded around 1 p.m. when a vigilant local farmer spotted a vehicle matching the suspect’s description and promptly alerted authorities with a location pin. The suspect was subsequently found inside the vehicle with self-inflicted injuries, although the exact nature of these injuries was not disclosed by Sheriff Rode.
Following the unfortunate incident, the Spirit Lake Tribal Council took action by placing all tribal employees on administrative leave and calling on the community to offer support to the victims’ families during this trying time.
