Minquadale, Del. — The Delaware State Police have named the suspect in a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a state trooper at a local DMV earlier this week. The incident unfolded around 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hessler Boulevard facility, leading to widespread shock and grief within the community.
Rahman Rose, 44, was identified as the assailant who fatally shot Corporal Matthew “Ty” Snook. The confrontation ended when a responding officer from New Castle County shot and killed Rose shortly after, preventing further violence. Cpl. Snook was a dedicated member of the Delaware State Police, having served for a decade. He leaves behind his wife and their one-year-old daughter.
Witnesses report that Rose entered the DMV under the pretense of being a customer. Without warning, he approached Snook, who was working an overtime shift at the reception desk, and shot him from behind. In a moment of bravery, Snook managed to push a nearby employee out of harm’s way before Rose fired another shot.
Following the assault, Rose barricaded himself inside, allowing customers to escape while he awaited law enforcement’s arrival. When officers approached, he reportedly opened fire at them. A police officer outside the building fatally returned fire, ending the standoff.
The police have described Cpl. Snook as a dependable and dedicated officer. In an official statement, they highlighted his commitment to the community and his respected role among colleagues. A local native, he graduated from Saint Mark’s High School and the University of Maryland, where he was an accomplished wrestler.
During the chaotic event, several individuals sustained minor injuries. One 40-year-old woman was hospitalized for non-gunshot-related injuries, and another 35-year-old woman was treated for shortness of breath but declined further medical transport. A second trooper also received evaluation for a minor injury unrelated to gunfire.
This incident has left a deep mark on the local community, igniting conversations around public safety and the risks faced by law enforcement. As investigations continue, many are reflecting on the service and sacrifice of officers like Cpl. Snook, who dedicated their lives to protecting others.
