Hong Kong — Tragedy struck at Hong Kong International Airport when a cargo plane veered off the runway and collided with a security patrol vehicle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals on October 20. Authorities confirmed that both casualties were inside the patrol vehicle at the time of the incident, while all four crew members aboard the Boeing 747 escaped unharmed.
The aircraft, operated by Turkish ACT Airlines and leased by Emirates, had just arrived from Dubai and landed shortly before 4 a.m. local time. Following its touchdown, the plane commenced a taxiing procedure and unexpectedly began to skid leftward, leading to the catastrophic crash.
Airport operations executive Steven Yiu reported that the pilots did not issue a distress call during their approach or landing. He clarified that the patrol vehicle was in its designated lane and did not enter the runway at any point before the accident occurred. “The patrol car absolutely did not rush onto the runway. It was the plane that went off the runway and crashed into the patrol car outside the fence,” Yiu stated during a press briefing.
Rescue crews arrived to find the cargo plane partially submerged in the sea, separated into two sections. The crew members were located awaiting assistance at an open door on the aircraft. Fire services official Yiu Men-Yeung reported that the two security personnel were trapped inside their vehicle, and rescue teams took approximately 40 minutes to locate them.
