Tragedy: Parents of Evergreen High School Shooter Exonerated, No Charges Filed

Evergreen, Colorado — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no charges will be brought against the parents of the teenager who fatally shot himself after injuring two classmates at Evergreen High School in September. The tragic incident, which shocked the local community, unfolded on September 10, 2025, when 16-year-old Desmond Holly took his own life following the attack.

Authorities reported that both students shot during the incident sustained serious injuries, requiring extensive medical treatment. As they continue to recover, the community remains in mourning and grappling with the fallout from this violent episode.

In their investigation, detectives collected DNA samples from Holly’s parents but found no connection between them and the weapon used in the shooting. Investigators revealed that the firearm, a Smith & Wesson .38 Special Revolver, was owned by the shooter’s grandparent and had been purchased in Florida in 1966.

The family’s attorney previously communicated to investigators that the handgun was a seldom-seen family heirloom stored securely in a locked safe. It was claimed that the weapon was rarely accessed and only briefly visible when the safe was opened by Holly’s father.

Sheriff’s office spokespeople indicated that the case would be closed unless new evidence arises that could lead to potential charges. They emphasized their commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability where possible.

“This case has been a source of deep sorrow for the families involved and the entire community,” the Sheriff’s Office stated, acknowledging the profound emotional impact of the tragedy.

Community leaders and mental health advocates are now calling for greater awareness around gun safety and mental health resources, aiming to prevent any future occurrences of violence in schools. The difficult conversations sparked by this event underscore the importance of addressing the circumstances that lead to such tragedies.

The shooting has left residents reflecting on the need for more robust support systems for families and students alike. In the wake of this disaster, there is a renewed focus on fostering resilience and safety within educational environments, ensuring that the community can move forward while honoring those affected by the incident.
