GILROY, California — A tragic incident unfolded Sunday afternoon in unincorporated Gilroy, where a family dispute escalated to violence, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Authorities say the episode began just before 3:30 p.m. at a home on Sheldon Avenue.
According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, family members reported that a 68-year-old man was shot by a relative who subsequently barricaded himself inside a garage. Responding deputies discovered the older man had sustained fatal injuries upon entering the residence.
As law enforcement evaluated the scene, they evacuated nearby homes for safety while attempting to communicate with the suspect. Sheriff’s spokesperson Brooks Jarosz mentioned that over an extended period of more than eight hours, officers made numerous attempts through announcements and phone calls to convince the suspect to come out peacefully.
Using a drone for surveillance, deputies located the suspect inside the garage, where he was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The identities of both the victim and the suspect are being withheld pending confirmation and notification of their families by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
Detectives from the sheriff’s Investigative Services Division are now handling the ongoing investigation, which authorities say is active and still developing.
