GREENFIELD, Iowa — Recovery efforts are underway in Greenfield, Iowa, following a devastating tornado that struck the town, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming lives. The tornado, which hit the town of 2,000 residents about 55 miles southwest of Des Moines, obliterated homes, crumpled cars, and even damaged massive power-producing wind turbines.
Authorities in Iowa, along with Governor Kim Reynolds, are working tirelessly to search for survivors and assess the extent of the damage caused by the deadly tornado. The storm also claimed lives in the nearby town of Corning when a woman lost her life after her vehicle was blown off the road during the severe weather.
The impact of the tornado extended beyond Iowa, as the storm system moved eastward, causing power outages and damage in parts of Illinois and Wisconsin. This destructive tornado comes amid a particularly active tornado season in the United States, with April seeing the second-highest number of tornadoes on record.
AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter described the tornado in Greenfield as a worst-case scenario, with debris being lifted thousands of feet into the air and falling several counties away. The tornado’s intensity was evident in the widespread damage it caused, reminiscent of an EF-4 tornado that hit Kentucky in 2021.
In the aftermath of the tornado, Greenfield’s hospital suffered damage, requiring injured individuals to be transported to other facilities for medical care. Residents came together to salvage belongings and support each other in the face of immense devastation.
The storm’s impact was felt beyond Iowa, with neighboring states also experiencing severe weather. Wisconsin, Minnesota, and parts of Illinois were all affected by tornadoes and damaging winds, highlighting the widespread impact of the extreme weather events.
