Abilene, Texas — A local man faces serious charges after allegedly making violent threats toward an upcoming Pride Parade, reportedly in response to the recent death of a conservative figure. Joshua Cole, 42, was taken into custody after he made incendiary remarks on Facebook, suggesting he intended to harm parade attendees.
According to court documents, Cole’s social media comments included explicit threats to “shoot people” at the event scheduled for September 18. He allegedly expressed disdain for the celebrations, suggesting extreme measures to retaliate, claiming, “we can send a clear message to the rest of them” and referencing a desire to “go hunting fairies.”
The comments were triggered by a post regarding a firearms ban at the Pride event, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The FBI arrested Cole the day after the posts were made, during which he downplayed his remarks, insisting he only made them in frustration and did not plan to carry out any attacks.
FBI Special Agent Sam Venuti emphasized in an affidavit that Cole’s threats were highly specific, aimed directly at individuals participating in the Pride festivities. During a court appearance, Cole was charged with making threatening communications. He has since remained in custody as he awaits further legal proceedings.
In light of the incident, the Abilene Pride Alliance issued a statement to reassure the community about safety protocols in place for the event. They expressed appreciation for the swift actions of local law enforcement, who had already been investigating the threats prior to Cole’s arrest.
The organization conveyed gratitude for the community’s support, noting the significant contributions that helped fortify security measures for the event. “Your support directly secured the safety of this year’s events,” they stated, underscoring a commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all participants and attendees.
As the investigation continues, officials are on high alert to ensure the Pride Parade proceeds without incident. Local authorities have increased security measures, aiming to protect participants and uphold the event’s spirit of inclusion and celebration.
The Abilene Pride Alliance has temporarily withheld further comments to focus on the ongoing investigation but remains committed to fostering a safe atmosphere for all involved.
