Teen’s Life Cut Short in Hit-and-Run Tragedy

GARLAND, TX – A tight-knit community in Garland is grappling with the aftermath of a tragic hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a teenage girl and left her brother severely injured. The incident occurred Saturday evening on a bustling road, leaving residents in shock and mourning the loss of a young life.

Barry Fleming, who works at a nearby convenience store, recalls the devastating moments leading up to the crash. He had just interacted with the two siblings, ages 14 and 16, moments before they were struck by a speeding vehicle. “You never expect something like this to happen, especially to people you were just talking to,” Fleming said.

According to Garland police, the driver was traveling at a high speed when he lost control of his vehicle, veering off the road and into a grassy area where the teens were walking. The car continued eastward, ultimately crashing into a stop sign and colliding with three other vehicles.

The driver, identified as Stetson E. Barlow from Rowlett, was arrested and charged with failing to stop and render aid. The charges include one count related to the death of the teenage girl and another for the serious injury inflicted on her brother.

Authorities are investigating whether intoxication played a role in the crash, as it is often a factor in such accidents. The police located Barlow at a residence in Garland, where he was taken into custody.

Fleming, deeply affected by the tragedy, started a memorial at the crash site to honor the victim. He expressed his frustration with reckless driving in the area, noting that speeding and street racing are common occurrences. “These drivers are maniacs,” he lamented.

Local residents are coming together to support the grieving family, with some organizing a vigil to remember the young girl’s life. The community’s response underscores the impact of the tragedy and the urgent need for safer driving practices in the area.

As the investigation continues, the community remains united in their grief, hoping for justice and advocating for measures to prevent future tragedies.
