Task Force Barrage Continues in Vancouver’s DTES Following Violent Assault on Police Officer

Vancouver, Canada – Following a recent violent assault on a police officer in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the police task force in the area is set to continue its operations. The assault occurred when two uniformed officers were patrolling the area and one of them was stabbed in the leg by an individual who then fled the scene. The injured officer is still in recovery and has not yet returned to duty.

The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of officers and residents in the Downtown Eastside. In response, Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer emphasized the need for accountability, stating that such acts of violence are unacceptable and those responsible must face consequences. The suspect in the assault, Solaris Onatta Running Dey, has been charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and assault of a peace officer with a weapon.

The attack has highlighted the ongoing efforts of “Task Force Barrage,” a $5-million initiative aimed at combating organized crime networks and targeting criminals in the Downtown Eastside. Despite the challenges posed by such incidents, Sgt. Steve Addison expressed the task force’s determination to continue its mission of enhancing safety in the area. He emphasized the positive impact of having additional officers on patrol and the ongoing efforts to seize weapons and drugs from the streets.

Drug trafficking remains a significant concern in the Downtown Eastside, with officers seizing a variety of illicit substances including fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine. In addition to visible policing, undercover operations are being conducted to target drug dealers and criminal networks operating in the neighborhood. The task force’s recent successes include the apprehension of a federal offender wanted Canada-wide and the arrest of a vehicle thief who fled towards the Downtown Eastside.

As authorities work to address the ongoing challenges in the area, the suspect in the assault, Dey, is scheduled to appear in court later this month. The incidents in the Downtown Eastside serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by both law enforcement and the community, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and strategic interventions to ensure public safety.
