COLUMBIA, MISSOURI – The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) is currently investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred over the weekend in Columbia.
The incident took place late Saturday night in the 1500 block of Raleigh Drive in north Columbia, where police responded to reports of a murder suspect from Moberly who had refused to drop a knife. Columbia Police Department (CPD) was contacted by the Moberly Police to assist in locating and apprehending the suspect, who was believed to be inside a residence on Raleigh Drive.
Upon arriving at the scene, CPD’s SWAT and crisis negotiation teams established that the suspect, an adult female, and several juveniles were inside the home. Despite efforts to negotiate with the suspect, he emerged from the residence armed with a knife and ignoring commands to drop the weapon. After less-lethal methods failed to subdue the suspect, multiple officers fired their weapons, fatally striking him.
Following standard protocol, Columbia Police requested the DDCC to conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while CPD’s internal affairs unit is also reviewing the incident. To respect the privacy of the deceased suspect’s family, his identity has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s DDCC at (573) 751-1000.
