MINNEAPOLIS — A 12-year-old girl returned home Thursday to a warm welcome from hundreds of supporters after enduring a harrowing recovery from a gunshot wound that nearly claimed her life. Sophia Forchas, who was critically injured during a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School on August 27, was greeted by a cheering crowd as she arrived in a white limousine escorted by a police motorcade.
Sophia spent 57 days in the hospital, undergoing extensive treatment, including the removal of the left portion of her skull to reduce swelling in her brain. Video footage shared by Mayor Jacob Frey captured the heartfelt moment when Sophia made her way through the city, surrounded by friends and family.
The tragic shooting, which occurred as students prayed at the church, claimed the lives of two children aged 8 and 10, while injuring 20 others. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as students took cover beneath pews while the assailant opened fire through stained glass windows. Sadly, many worshippers were trapped, unable to escape through doors that had been barricaded.
Sophia’s brother was present during the attack but escaped unharmed. Their mother, a pediatric critical care nurse, was at work when the tragedy unfolded, unaware that her own children’s school was caught in the violence. Despite the severity of her injuries, Sophia’s recovery has surprised her medical team, allowing her to return home just in time for her upcoming 13th birthday.
In a statement celebrating her return, a family spokesperson highlighted Sophia’s resilience. “Welcome home, Sophia. Minneapolis loves you,” Mayor Frey expressed during the ceremony. Residents lined the streets with signs and balloons, offering their support and admiration for the young survivor.
Sophia’s recovery was described as nothing short of miraculous. After initially being in critical condition, she began to show remarkable improvement, eventually regaining her ability to breathe independently. In a heartfelt message, her family emphasized the determination she displayed throughout her ordeal. “Her journey remains challenging, but she presses on, not just for herself, but for everyone who held her in their thoughts and prayers,” they stated.
Following her discharge from Gillette Children’s Hospital, where she received rehabilitation, Sophia and her family took time to visit Hennepin Healthcare. There, staff members greeted her with warm hugs and a sign reading “Sophia Strong.” The hospital expressed pride in her progress, stating that her journey has inspired many in the community.
This poignant return marks a hopeful chapter for Sophia and her family, illustrating the power of community support in times of tragedy and the human spirit’s ability to overcome profound adversity.
