SALEM, N.H. — The tragic events stemming from a mass shooting at Brown University and the murder of an MIT professor have taken a grim turn with the revelation of the suspect’s death. Claudio Neves Valente, 48, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, two days after a violent incident that left two dead and several others injured.
Authorities reported that Valente’s death has been classified as a suicide. The New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s office indicated that he likely died on Tuesday, the day after he allegedly shot and killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro in Brookline, Massachusetts. Investigators noted that Valente had rented the storage unit in November.
Valente’s rampage at Brown on Saturday targeted the Barus & Holley engineering building, where he opened fire, killing two individuals and injuring nine others. A Portuguese national and permanent U.S. resident, Valente had a personal connection to Loureiro, having attended college with him in the 1990s in Portugal.
On Thursday, law enforcement discovered Valente’s rental vehicle outside the storage facility. The vehicle had been outfitted with several license plates, including one from Maine that had not been in circulation since 2011. This unusual practice raised further questions about his actions leading up to the shooting.
When Valente’s body was located, he was in possession of two 9mm Glock handguns featuring green laser sights, along with five magazines loaded with nearly 200 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, he had nearly $900 in cash at the time. Investigators also uncovered more ammunition and body armor in his vehicle.
The origins of the firearms Valente possessed remain unclear. Firearms expert Nicholas Daugustine suggested that it is plausible Valente acquired them in Florida, where he was last known to reside. He emphasized that firearms are typically purchased where the buyer resides, and legal purchases require a successful background check.
