Frankfort, Kentucky – A destructive storm system swept through Kentucky over the holiday weekend, causing havoc in many communities with multiple tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. The hardest-hit areas were in western and central Kentucky, where Governor Andy Beshear reported significant damage to homes and businesses, as well as the tragic deaths of four individuals and critical injuries to a fifth.
Among the deceased were a 67-year-old woman in Mercer County, a 62-year-old woman in Hardin County, a 48-year-old woman in Hopkins County, and a 34-year-old man in Jefferson County. Governor Beshear highlighted the familiar devastation faced by Kentucky communities, particularly those that had already suffered in the December 2021 tornado outbreak.
The storm prompted over a dozen counties and several cities, including the entire state of Kentucky, to declare a state of emergency. Governor Beshear also activated the state’s price gouging statute in response to the crisis. Despite the destruction, Beshear acknowledged that the situation could have been even worse, praising the weather awareness and preparedness of Kentucky residents.
As officials began damage surveys, it was revealed that a reported long-track tornado had traveled over 70 miles, impacting various locations along its path. Over 215,000 Kentuckians were left without power at the peak of the outages, with efforts underway to restore electricity, particularly in harder-hit areas like Trigg County.
Governor Beshear urged affected families to seek shelter and assistance through local emergency officials or designated shelters. Resources were made available at community centers and state parks for those in need. Additionally, the storm caused environmental concerns, including a significant fuel leak from a dock on Dale Hollow Lake in Cumberland and Clinton counties.
