NEW MILFORD, New Jersey — A man was found dead from multiple stab wounds early Thursday morning, prompting a swift police response that resulted in the arrest of a suspect in connection with the attack.
Authorities received a welfare check request for a home on River Road around 3 a.m. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered Mateo Ochoa-Gonzalez, 24, unresponsive on the second floor. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Justin Wilhelm was apprehended shortly thereafter and is facing charges including first-degree murder and weapon offenses. Upon their arrival, officers found Wilhelm outside the residence with apparent blood stains on his hands. He allegedly placed the 911 call reporting the incident.
The police cordoned off the area surrounding the residence, which is located on a busy street, as they began to gather evidence. Neighbors reported the house had been the site of several police incidents in recent weeks, including a large police presence just days before the stabbing.
Deputy Chief of Detectives Jeff Angermeyer assured the community that there is no ongoing threat, describing the incident as isolated. He urged any individuals with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
