CANTON, Ohio — A couple in Stark County is grappling with the aftermath of a terrifying attack by their son, which left them fearing for their lives. In their first public remarks since being released from the hospital, Linda and Jesse Shaffer described the violent encounter that occurred in their home just days after they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
On the evening of December 3, deputies responding to a call found the couple wounded in their residence on Carnwise Street SE. Their son, 49-year-old Joshua Lee Shaffer, has been charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of attempted murder, following the assault that left his parents with serious injuries.
The Shaffers recounted a harrowing experience in which they believed they would die. “When I told him it was time for him to leave, he just snapped,” Linda Shaffer said. This confrontation escalated rapidly, with her husband, Jesse, stepping in to protect her only to become a target himself. “I knew he was trying to kill us,” Jesse added, recalling the intensity of the attack.
Linda, who sustained life-threatening injuries, described the ordeal as a struggle for survival. “I had to pull myself up off the kitchen floor,” she explained. The couple’s fears are now compounded by concerns for their safety, as they worry about the possibility of Joshua being released from custody. “Every noise makes me jump,” Linda admitted, while Jesse echoed her fears, stating if Joshua were to be released, he would likely return to finish what he started.
This incident marked a shocking shift in their family dynamic, as both parents noted that prior to this, Joshua had displayed only disruptive behavior, often related to alcohol. “He’d been loud and argumentative, but nothing like this,” said Linda.
Authorities reported that the couple was transported to Aultman Hospital for treatment of their injuries. While Jesse’s condition was classified as non-life-threatening, Linda’s injuries required intensive care.
