Shooting Tragedy Strikes Georgia Family as Mother of Three is Fatally Shot Hours After Celebration

ATLANTA — A Georgia family is grappling with grief following the tragic death of a mother just hours after a family birthday celebration. Lareon “Lay Lay” Brown, 26, was fatally shot during a violent incident early Sunday, leaving behind three young children and a devastated community.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. after a fight escalated in Carrollton. Witnesses recalled the chaotic scene, describing how the joyous atmosphere quickly transformed into horror. Brown’s sister, Netorian Crawford, expressed the family’s anguish, remembering her sibling as a vibrant soul who lit up every room. “She was the backbone to her family,” Crawford said. “Lay Lay could make anyone smile; she had a million-dollar smile.”

Just hours before the shooting, the family gathered to celebrate Brown’s daughter Zynova’s birthday, a day meant for joy that ended in heartbreak. “Her momma is left with three kids to raise and no answers,” Crawford lamented, highlighting the profound loss of a nurturing figure.

Two additional individuals sustained injuries during the shooting, including Brown’s cousin, Kathy Cheeks, who is still grappling with trauma from the night. Cheeks recounted fleeing the scene, overwhelmed with fear and confusion. “I heard her calling for someone, but I just ran,” she recalled tearfully.

Law enforcement has since arrested three suspects in connection with the incident: Jamine Hutchinson, 31, Zontavious Vaughn, 26, and 23-year-old Cyntez Worthy. Each faces serious charges, including felony murder and aggravated assault, as authorities continue their investigation into the violent outbreak.

In the wake of this tragedy, Brown’s family has started a crowdfunding campaign to assist with funeral expenses, emphasizing the need for community support during this challenging time. The family has expressed gratitude for any assistance provided as they navigate their immense loss and seek justice for Brown.

The Carrollton community is now rallying together, mourning the loss of a beloved mother and advocating for peace in the face of rising violence. As families come together to support one another, they also reflect on the need for meaningful conversations around safety and community.
