SAVANNAH, Ga. – The city of Savannah, Georgia, is reeling from a string of gun violence incidents that have occurred since Friday, resulting in at least two fatalities and over a dozen injuries. Police reported that a total of 14 individuals were injured, with two fatalities, including a young boy, in the wake of the shootings.
The most recent and largest shooting took place on Saturday just before midnight in Ellis Square, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. The incident, believed to have stemmed from a dispute between two females in the area, escalated when unidentified individuals began firing guns.
Authorities disclosed that the 11 adult victims were promptly treated and transported to a nearby hospital, with around 10 of them sustaining gunshot wounds. The age range of the victims spanned from 20 to 38 years old. Despite the violence, law enforcement clarified that the shooting was not affiliated with any gang-related activity and is currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify multiple shooters.
Savannah Police and Mayor Van Johnson addressed the press during a news conference on Sunday afternoon to provide updates on the recent spate of shootings in the city. Over the span of five incidents since Friday, the community has been grappling with the aftermath of the gun violence.
One of the incidents involved a woman sustaining a non-life-threatening gunshot wound that occurred at around 3:50 a.m. on Friday. The alleged perpetrator, Kingsley Taylor, was swiftly arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Further investigations unveiled additional shooting incidents, such as a late-night shooting on Waters Ave and a tragic event on West 49th Street where a young boy tragically succumbed to his gunshot wounds. The police also responded to a separate shooting near Crane and West 56th Streets, where an adult male lost his life and a juvenile victim was found.
As authorities continue to investigate these incidents, they urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing inquiries. The city remains on high alert as law enforcement officers work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of its residents in the midst of this surge in gun violence.
