Akron, Ohio – A shooting at a street party in Akron over the weekend left one person dead and 24 others injured. Police suspect that at least one individual opened fire on the crowd from a vehicle during the incident. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday, where investigators discovered over 35 shell casings strewn across the block.
Chief Brian Harding revealed that two handguns were found at the scene, indicating that some partygoers may have returned fire at the vehicle. The chaotic scene included plastic cups, shoes, and other debris scattered along the residential street where the celebration was taking place. As of Sunday night, no suspects had been identified, prompting authorities to urge witnesses to come forward.
Mayor Shammas Malik expressed deep concern over the significant number of victims, vowing to hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The deceased, Lateris Cook, a 27-year-old resident of Akron, was identified by the county medical examiner. The wounded individuals ranged in age from 19 to 43, with at least two in critical condition.
According to Harding, officers had attempted to disperse the party earlier in the evening due to noise complaints, but no arrests were made. Despite their efforts, the festivities continued, leading to the tragic outcome. Many party attendees returned after the initial police intervention, culminating in reports of gunfire shortly after midnight on Sunday.
Mayor Malik emphasized the importance of upholding accountability for acts of violence to ensure community safety. The city has joined forces with Summit County Crime Stoppers, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives in offering a total reward of $22,500 for information leading to an arrest in connection with the shooting.
