Shooting Leaves Minneapolis Officer Dead and Others Injured on Blaisdell Avenue

Minneapolis, Minnesota – A tragic shooting incident on Thursday afternoon in Minneapolis resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a Minneapolis police officer. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office released a statement providing further details on the shooting that occurred on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue, where Officer Jamal Mitchell lost his life due to multiple gunshot wounds, ruled as a homicide. Another victim, 32-year-old Osman Said Jimale, also succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in what was determined to be a homicide.

The suspected shooter involved in the incident also died, although their identity and cause of death were not disclosed as of Friday evening. Minneapolis Police responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment building in the Whittier neighborhood when the situation escalated, leading to the tragic outcome. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) reported that officers were ambushed as they arrived at the scene.

The medical examiner’s office stated that Jimale was found deceased inside the apartment, while Officer Mitchell was shot outside and later passed away at the Hennepin Healthcare ER. Additionally, four individuals sustained injuries during the incident, including an officer, a firefighter, and a bystander in a vehicle in the neighborhood. While the firefighter was treated and discharged, the others remained hospitalized as of Friday afternoon.

In a press conference following the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey honored Officer Mitchell as a hero for his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The law enforcement community expressed deep mourning and extended condolences to Mitchell’s family, friends, and colleagues. Governor Tim Walz pledged state resources to support the ongoing investigation and ensure the safety of first responders working to protect the community.

Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar also shared their condolences for those affected by the tragedy, emphasizing the need for unity and support for law enforcement personnel.
