Shooting in Montgomery’s Nightlife District Claims Two Lives and Injures Dozens Amidst Chaos

Montgomery, Alabama — A night out in the capital city turned to chaos Saturday as gunfire erupted between rival groups in a busy downtown area, leaving two people dead and 12 others injured. The violence unfolded around 11:30 p.m. in a nightlife district that was bustling with activity, particularly following a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College.

Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys confirmed during a Sunday news conference that the deceased were identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalonda Williams. Among the injured, five were reported to be in critical condition, while the other seven were not facing life-threatening injuries. The victims, who ranged in age from 16 to 43, included several young people, with seven under 20.

“This was a mass shooting situation,” Graboys stated, describing the violence as an exchange of gunfire between two parties amidst a crowd. He underscored the reckless nature of the gunmen, who did not appear to consider the safety of bystanders.

Following the incident, police quickly began gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses, though no arrests had been made by early Sunday morning. Graboys emphasized the department’s commitment to pursuing all leads. “We will do everything we need to gather every bit of evidence to chase down whoever is involved,” he remarked.

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed condemned the incident and vowed to hold accountable not only the shooters but anyone connected to the violence. He stressed that such actions would not be tolerated in the community. “For us, this is not acceptable,” Reed stated. “We’re not going to normalize this.”

During the news briefing, the mayor reiterated that the shooting was unrelated to the various events happening in the city that weekend, including the Alabama National Fair, which attracted many visitors. Authorities believe that one person among the 14 shot may have been specifically targeted in the confrontation.

Graboys detailed the confusion that ensued during the chaos, as multiple individuals in the area reacted by pulling out their own firearms. He described the scene as “very chaotic,” emphasizing the dangers that arise from such a scenario. Law enforcement recovered shell casings from various weapons at the scene, indicating that at least two individuals were armed during the conflict.

As the investigation continues, Montgomery residents are left grappling with the impact of the violence in what should have been a festive atmosphere. Both the police and city officials are dedicated to restoring safety and ensuring that such an incident does not repeat itself in the future.
