Shooting Claims Life of Jabari Henley, Son of Accused Crips Leader Eugene “Big U” Henley

Los Angeles — A tragic incident unfolded late Friday night when Jabari Henley, 34, was shot and killed in South Los Angeles. His father, Eugene “Big U” Henley, is currently facing federal charges in connection with an extensive criminal investigation linked to a so-called “Mafia-like” enterprise.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed Jabari’s identity after the shooting, which occurred shortly after 11 p.m. at the intersection of Figueroa and 69th streets in the Vermont-Slauson neighborhood. According to authorities, Jabari approached a vehicle before being shot by individuals inside, who then fled the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department has not released any information on the suspects.

Emergency crews pronounced Jabari dead on-site. He is the son of Eugene Henley, a prominent figure in the hip-hop industry who previously helped launch the career of late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Eugene has been recognized as a significant influence in the rap community, with rapper Wiz Khalifa referring to him as the “godfather of rap.”

Jabari Henley was a former linebacker at Crenshaw High School, where he was remembered fondly by his coach, Robert Garrett. “He brought positivity and a good attitude to the field,” Garrett said. “Hearing about his passing was devastating.”

Jabari’s brother, Daiyan Henley, currently plays linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers. In a poignant moment during a recent game, Daiyan reflected on his sibling’s death and the emotional weight he carried onto the field. “I just wanted to talk to my brother one more time,” he said. “It was an emotional moment for me, just to be able to make a play on a day like this.”

Eugene Henley, 58, awaits trial on multiple charges, including operating a criminal enterprise involved in extortion, human trafficking, and murder. He denies the allegations and has publicly declared his innocence, insisting he has always aimed to benefit his community. Following his recent indictment, he is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

Federal authorities allege that Eugene orchestrated the kidnapping and murder of a young rapper over perceived disrespect, further implicating him in the robbery of a Los Angeles marijuana dispensary. He is accused of misappropriating donations intended for his charitable endeavors, redirecting funds to his personal accounts.

Eugene’s past is also marked by a significant prison sentence. He spent 13 years behind bars for an attempted robbery involving an undercover sheriff’s deputy in 1991. The Henley family’s situation highlights the complexities of their intertwined legacies within both the rap community and law enforcement scrutiny.

As investigations continue into both Jabari’s untimely death and Eugene’s legal troubles, the impact on the family and community remains palpable, underscoring the challenges they now face.
