Indianapolis, Indiana – A tragic incident unfolded early Sunday morning in Indianapolis, leaving one person dead and five others injured, including a police officer, in a shooting incident that occurred at a bar on East Washington Street.
According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Christopher Bailey, the altercation took place around 1:30 a.m. in the bar’s parking lot where two uniformed officers were working off-duty. Both officers engaged in gunfire with at least one suspect. One officer sustained injuries to the upper thigh and shoulder, possibly from falling after being shot, but was reported to be in stable condition and expected to be released from the hospital later in the day.
Following the initial exchange, additional officers arrived at the scene to find four more individuals with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. These victims, two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man, and a 33-year-old woman, were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Tragically, a man arrived at Community East Hospital soon after with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and passed away despite medical intervention. Detectives suspect his connection to the shooting. The victim’s identity will be released by the Marion County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin, Chief Bailey disclosed.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a firearm at the scene, although the reason behind the initial disturbance remains unclear. Interviews with witnesses and review of surveillance footage are underway to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
