ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. — A gunman who took the lives of two children and injured 21 others at a Minneapolis church last month was seen on surveillance footage visiting a local gun shop shortly before the tragedy. The store’s owner reported that the shooter’s behavior during the visit raised no flags.
On August 23, 23-year-old Robin Westman spent approximately 40 minutes at Frontiersman Sports. During his visit, he handled various firearms and ultimately purchased a revolver, according to shop owner Kory Krause. Westman had successfully passed all required background checks and possessed a valid permit for the acquisition of the firearm.
Despite the gun purchase, investigators discovered that the revolver was not utilized in the August 27 shooting at the Church of the Annunciation. During the incident, which occurred as students from the adjacent Annunciation Catholic School gathered for their first Mass of the school year, Westman fired 116 rounds using a semiautomatic assault-style rifle, a shotgun, and a different handgun, all of which were legally obtained but not purchased from Krause’s shop.
Westman, who once attended the school, reportedly had familial ties to the parish. Details regarding his motive remain unclear, as he died by suicide following the assault. Investigators continue to search for answers about his actions leading up to the shooting.
Krause indicated that his employees, trained to identify potentially dangerous customers, saw no indications of trouble during Westman’s visit. “This individual interacted the way anyone would expect a responsible gun buyer to behave,” Krause stated. He emphasized that nothing in Westman’s demeanor or conversation hinted at any violent intent.
The aftermath of the shooting has reignited discussions around gun safety and legislation in Minnesota. Democratic Governor Tim Walz announced intentions to call a special session to explore proposals aimed at increasing school safety. Among these proposals could be a ban on assault weapons, although gaining bipartisan support from the divided legislature may prove challenging.
In contrast, House Republicans introduced a set of proposals focused on enhancing school security funding, supporting the presence of resource officers, and increasing mental health treatment options. They opposed any new restrictions on firearm access.
Activist group Students Demand Action, which advocates for stricter gun control, is organizing nationwide school walkouts to demand legislative action against assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, amplifying pressure on lawmakers in the wake of the shooting.
