Fort Pierce, Florida – The Fort Pierce Police Department addressed a recent shooting involving its officers during a news conference on Monday. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, resulted in the death of 28-year-old Bernard Smith, who was shot and killed by the police after exchanging gunfire with them.
According to authorities, the situation unfolded with multiple reports on Saturday. The first report was of a person shot at the 1400 block of 23rd Street, followed by a second call concerning a vehicle theft at the 2100 block on Avenue N. Officers responded promptly to both incidents, leading them to the shooter at the 1600 block of North 25th Street.
During the encounter, a gunfight broke out between the gunman, identified as Smith, and the responding officers. Tragically, Smith was fatally shot during the exchange. Despite the intensity of the situation, the police did provide medical assistance to Smith before he was taken to a hospital for further treatment.
Once the scenes were secured, investigations revealed that victims were targeted at the 1600 block of NW 24th Street and the 2400 block of Avenue P. Regrettably, two victims succumbed to their injuries. As of Monday afternoon, Craig Robinson, who was shot at the first scene, remains hospitalized. The deceased victims were identified as Devin Bradley, 24, and Roosevelt Benjamin, 59, all residents of Fort Pierce.
In response to the tragic events, the city of Fort Pierce released a statement expressing deep sorrow for the loss of lives and offering heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.
