Severe Storms Leave 22 Dead and Hundreds Injured Across Central US

Claremore, Oklahoma – Devastating tornadoes wreaked havoc across the central United States, leaving at least 22 people dead and hundreds injured in their wake. The states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas bore the brunt of the severe storms, with Cook County, Texas experiencing seven fatalities, including two young children aged 5 and 2.

In Cook County, Texas, a tornado on Saturday caused extensive damage, destroying homes and prompting Texas Governor Greg Abbott to extend a disaster declaration issued in April due to severe storms and flooding. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported five deaths in the state, one of which was a man who died of a heart attack while clearing fallen trees.

The town of Charleston, Kentucky was struck by a tornado on Sunday, with officials confirming it traveled a path of 40 miles. The town was left without power or water service, and residents are now faced with the daunting task of clearing downed trees and debris.

Across Arkansas, tornadoes left a trail of destruction, with debris scattered, trees mangled, and businesses damaged. The storms also caused disruptions for travelers on the busy Memorial Day holiday, resulting in over 500 U.S. flights being canceled and more than 7,700 flights delayed on Monday.

As of Monday evening, over 200,000 people in the Southern and Eastern U.S. were still without power. City manager John Feary of Claremore, Oklahoma stated that crews are working tirelessly to clear roads and remove fallen trees in the aftermath of the severe weather, with significant damage reported including total loss structures.

The Storm Prediction Center warned of lingering severe storms in the Northeast and across the mid-Atlantic on Monday night. Tornado watches were issued for multiple regions, including the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Virginia. A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for parts of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina through the evening.

In Texas, further storms were forecasted for Monday night, which could bring additional hail and strong winds to the already impacted areas. Authorities and residents alike are bracing for continued challenges as they work to recover and rebuild in the wake of the devastating tornadoes and severe weather.
