Austin, Texas – A fatal shooting at an H-E-B store in northeast Austin has left the community in shock. Authorities have reported that 32-year-old Michael Rosario was shot and killed on Friday afternoon at the Canyon Ridge Drive location. The incident occurred as police were responding to a trespassing call and received multiple 911 calls about an active shooter at the store.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Rosario was shot by a security guard while being escorted out of the store. Police stated that Rosario had displayed a knife and attempted to use a hubcap as a shield before charging at the guard. Despite the guard’s use of a Taser, Rosario continued to advance, leading to the fatal shooting.
The H-E-B store reopened the following morning, but police have emphasized that their investigation is still ongoing. Additionally, the supermarket chain has confirmed its cooperation with the authorities in the investigation. The tragic death of Rosario marks Austin’s 47th homicide of the year 2024.
Eyewitnesses at the store, like Eric Josserand, described the chaos that ensued during the shooting. Josserand recalled mistaking the gunshots for construction noise before realizing the severity of the situation. He recounted how the security guard attempted to escort the man out of the store before the altercation escalated into violence.
Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Josserand expressed gratitude that his loved ones were not present during the incident. He admitted that the ordeal has left him shaken, considering avoiding the store in the future to avoid triggering traumatic memories. The community at large is grappling with the aftermath of the shooting, highlighting the impact of such violence on both individuals and neighborhoods.
