Newburgh, New York – Nasier Codett, a 23-year-old resident of Newburgh, has been sentenced to 8.5 years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery that took place in the city in July 2023. The sentencing was announced by Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler on Wednesday, February 26.
The robbery occurred on July 1, 2023, when Codett, along with an accomplice, cut power to a gas station in Newburgh, causing the store to plunge into darkness. They then entered the store armed with a rifle and demanded the clerk to open the cash register. During the robbery, they stole money, lottery tickets, and cigarettes. When the clerk was unable to open the ATM, one of the suspects fired a gun into the ground before physically assaulting the clerk.
Law enforcement was alerted by a witness, leading to a police response. Upon arrival, the clerk was found with his hands raised in surrender. Codett and his accomplice attempted to hide in a backroom and barricade themselves but were eventually apprehended by authorities.
Codett had previously pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery. His co-defendant, 19-year-old Tyreek Shelby, had already been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his involvement in the crime. In addition to his prison term, Codett will also have to serve five years of post-release supervision.
Following the sentencing, District Attorney Hoovler commended the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the City of Newburgh Police, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Newburgh Police, and New York State Police, in ensuring that both individuals were brought to justice.
“With the sentencing of this co-defendant today, two violent felons have been rightfully held responsible for their acts of violence,” Hoovler stated. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation among law enforcement agencies in combatting crime and upholding justice in the community.
