Chicago, Illinois – In a tragic road rage incident back in September 2022, a 3-year-old boy named Mateo Zastro was shot and killed as his mother tried to escape from another vehicle. Despite nearly a year and a half passing, the killer of Mateo Zastro has not been found. However, his family is hopeful that a reward offered by Cook County Crime Stoppers will help bring justice to their son’s tragic death.
Veronica Zastro, Mateo’s mother, was driving with her children when another vehicle followed and caught up to them after a confrontation in Chicago. Multiple rounds were fired into their SUV, ultimately killing Mateo with a single bullet to the head in front of his siblings and mother. Veronica continues to be haunted by the memory and has tattooed Mateo’s likeness on her arm to keep his memory alive.
Community members rallied in support of the Zastro family following the devastating incident, honoring Mateo’s memory with an honorary street name and murals in the neighborhood. Despite the outpouring of support, the person responsible for Mateo’s death remains at large.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is now offering a cash reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of Mateo’s killer. Veronica Zastro remains hopeful that justice will be served for her 3-year-old son, emphasizing the importance of bringing closure to their family.
