Holguín, Cuba – Two years after surviving a brutal attack that nearly claimed his life, Lester Domínguez, a young Cuban, is still on his journey to recovery with a newfound sense of hope. The harrowing event, where he was attacked with a machete in Holguín in an attempt to steal his cellphone, continues to be etched in his memory.
Despite facing months of challenges and undergoing multiple medical procedures, Lester has shown significant progress in his rehabilitation. However, he still struggles with the ability to walk. Determined to continue his path to recovery, he is set to enter the Julito Díaz hospital in Havana next month. His father, Dennis Domínguez, shared their optimism for his continued progress, emphasizing the significance of both medical intervention and faith in the healing process.
The young man’s family remains grateful for the support they have received from well-wishers, medical professionals, and those who have prayed for Lester’s recovery. Last July, on his 19th birthday, Lester embarked on a new treatment program at the Julio Díaz hospital. Dealing with an incomplete C5 spinal cord injury, his recovery has been gradual. While regaining sensitivity and mobility in some areas, he continues to struggle with certain physical limitations.
Seeking alternative methods to advance his rehabilitation, Lester turned to physiotherapists in Havana who focused on enhancing his chest, abdomen, and limbs. The family encountered financial obstacles along the way, prompting Lester to express the desire to seek treatment outside of Cuba for a chance at restoring mobility in his legs.
Despite the challenges faced, Dennis explored the possibility of leaving through Nicaragua to facilitate Lester’s access to medical care beyond the confines of the island. Grappling with limited resources and hindrances like power outages affecting his progress, the family perseveres in their efforts to secure the best possible care for Lester’s recovery.
