EAST RIDGE, Tennessee — A tragic accident on Interstate 75 during Mother’s Day weekend has led to serious charges against a truck driver whose actions resulted in the deaths of two adults and a child. Joseph Antoinier, 65, faces multiple counts, including three for reckless homicide following a pileup that left one family devastated and several others injured.
The May incident unfolded when Antoinier allegedly failed to apply his brakes, colliding with five vehicles and triggering a chaotic scene. The crash claimed the lives of 23-year-old Lane Smith and 61-year-old David Huggins, both pronounced dead at the scene. Tragically, Lane Smith’s young son, Sawyer Gene Smith, succumbed to his injuries a week later, amplifying the heartache for the surviving family members.
Authorities have since upgraded Antoinier’s charges to incorporate the death of the toddler, bringing the total to three counts of reckless homicide, three counts of reckless aggravated assault, and seven counts of felony reckless endangerment. His case will be presented to a grand jury after he waived his preliminary hearing.
Witnesses reported that Antoinier’s truck was swerving erratically before the crash; police confirmed that video evidence showed the vehicle traveling at a high speed as it approached slowing traffic. The reckless behavior not only resulted in fatalities but also left several individuals hospitalized, some in critical condition.
In response to the incident, friends and family of the victims have created a GoFundMe campaign, appealing for support to help the grieving Smith family. Organizers expressed gratitude for the community’s response, as donations continued to pour in following the loss of Sawyer.
Adding to the tragedy, local police revealed that the young boy became an organ donor, saving another life through his final act. “In his darkest hour, Sawyer was able to give that gift,” said Assistant Police Chief Josh Creel, further highlighting the profound impact of this heartbreaking event.
Amazon, the company under which Antoinier was contracted, expressed its condolences and pledged cooperation with ongoing investigations, emphasizing that the driver was employed via a third-party logistics service. Meanwhile, ongoing investigations by local law enforcement are scrutinizing the events leading up to the deadly collision.
As the community mourns, the East Ridge Police Department continues its thorough investigation, ensuring that accountability is sought for the victims’ families. The case shines a light on roadway safety and the potentially devastating consequences of negligent driving, reminding all of the critical importance of safe practices behind the wheel.
