Washington, D.C. — A recent listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat chicken fettuccine Alfredo meals has resulted in tragic consequences, including three confirmed fatalities and one fetal loss. Health officials have warned consumers about the potential dangers associated with these products, which were distributed to popular grocery chains Kroger and Walmart across the nation.
The offending meals, produced by FreshRealm, include several varieties of chicken fettuccine Alfredo. Specific products under recall are available in various tray sizes, with the largest being a 32.8-ounce tray labeled as “Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine Tender Pasta, Creamy Alfredo Sauce, White Meat Chicken, and Shaved Parmesan Cheese.” These items have a best-by date of June 27, 2025, or earlier. Also affected are smaller trays containing similar ingredients and one labeled “Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo.”
Each recalled product is identified by establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” and “EST. P-47718.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has alerted consumers to carefully check their refrigerators and freezers for these items.
FSIS officials have expressed concern that some consumers may not be aware of the recall and might still possess these potentially dangerous products. They urge anyone who has purchased these meals to avoid eating them. Returning the products to the store or discarding them is strongly recommended.
Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for listeriosis, poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations. Pregnant women, newborns, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk for serious complications from this infection.
The recall comes amid ongoing investigations by multiple public health agencies, including the FSIS, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These agencies are working to contain the outbreak and understand its origins.
In light of this situation, health experts are advising consumers to remain vigilant and check any pre-packaged food items for recall notifications. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever or gastrointestinal issues after consuming potentially contaminated food is encouraged to seek medical attention promptly.
As the public investigates their kitchen supplies, experts stress the importance of food safety practices, including proper storage and cooking temperatures. Ensuring that food is thoroughly cooked and avoiding cross-contamination can help reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.
Consumers are reminded that their health and safety should always come first, and staying informed about food recalls is critical in preventing further tragedies.
