Otsu, Shiga Prefecture – A troubling incident unfolded on Okunoshima, known as “Rabbit Island” in Hiroshima Prefecture, where a man was arrested for cruelly kicking a rabbit to its death. The island, home to approximately 500 wild rabbits, has become a popular destination due to the adorable creatures that roam freely, attracting visitors looking to interact with them.
Between November and January, a series of unsettling events occurred as 77 rabbits were discovered deceased with signs of broken bones and other injuries. This raised concerns among officials and prompted investigations to uncover the cause of these unnatural deaths.
On January 21, the situation took a distressing turn when a witness observed a man kicking a rabbit on Okunoshima. The witness took action to restrain the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Riku Hotta from Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, who was subsequently arrested for violating Japan’s Animal Protection Law. Tragically, the rabbit succumbed to its injuries shortly after the incident.
The incident not only shocked the local community but also shed light on the vulnerability of the island’s trusting rabbit population. Despite being wild, the rabbits on Okunoshima are accustomed to human interaction, creating a false sense of security that was exploited by the perpetrator.
Authorities are now investigating whether Hotta’s actions are linked to the previous suspicious rabbit deaths on the island, which occurred in clusters over three separate periods. This has raised questions about the extent of his involvement and whether he may have been responsible for more than just the one incident he was caught for.
