YORK, Pa. – A somber procession was held in honor of West York police Officer Andrew Duarte, who tragically lost his life while responding to a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York on February 22. The incident, which also left multiple others injured, deeply impacted the community as first responders gathered to pay their respects to the fallen officer.
Members of the emergency services lined up along George Street at the entrance of York Hospital on Saturday evening. As emergency vehicles passed by, their lights flashed in a poignant tribute to Officer Duarte. The tragic events unfolded when 49-year-old Yannis Arcangel Ortiz entered the UPMC Memorial Hospital armed with a semiautomatic handgun and zip ties, leading to a hostage situation in the ICU. During the ordeal, Ortiz shot and injured several hospital staff members, including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian. Officer Duarte was among those who responded to the crisis, bravely facing the gunman in an attempt to disarm him.
Authorities later confirmed that Ortiz was shot and killed during the confrontation, but not before inflicting serious harm on multiple individuals. The York County District Attorney emphasized that the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers, including Officer Duarte, was necessary to protect lives during the targeted attack on the hospital’s ICU.
