Shirley, Massachusetts – Three inmates in Massachusetts are set to face charges in relation to a violent assault that left five correction officers injured at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster last year. The incident, which occurred on September 18, 2024, resulted in one officer being stabbed 12 times in the back and another officer being stabbed in the head. Three additional officers sustained injuries while responding to the attack, all requiring hospitalization for treatment.
The suspects involved in the assault, Jose R. Crespo, Heriberto Rivera-Negron, and Jeffrey Tapia, were subsequently moved to different facilities following the incident. They now face charges that include mayhem, armed assault to murder, and assault to murder. Reports from both prison officers and inmates indicate a growing concern over the dangerous environment within the prison.
