IRVING, TX – Investigators in Irving are grappling with a perplexing case involving the murder of a 37-year-old man, Torrence Devereaux, who was fatally shot in his home. Despite extensive inquiries, police have not identified any motives or leads that could explain this tragic incident.
The victim, Devereaux, was the son of Dallas County Constable Deanna Hammond, a respected figure in the community. Hammond, who oversees Precinct Two, which includes eight cities in the eastern part of the county, is now facing the unimaginable loss of her son. She described Devereaux as a dedicated father and an accomplished individual who had a promising future.
Devereaux’s life was marked by academic and athletic achievements. In high school, he was an honors student and a talented football player, earning scholarships that highlighted his potential. He was deeply involved in his community, mentoring young boys and coaching a little league football team alongside his own son. Under his guidance, the team celebrated two championship victories last year.
The incident occurred early in the morning on February 23. Surveillance footage released by Irving police shows a group of individuals, appearing to be of high school age, approaching Devereaux’s home. They fired shots through the door, resulting in Devereaux’s death. The suspects fled in a vehicle, believed to be either a Honda or an Acura sedan.
Constable Hammond is appealing to the public for assistance. She urges anyone with information about the individuals in the surveillance footage to come forward and contact Detective D. Gorski at the Irving Police Department. The police department has made images of the suspects and their vehicle widely available, hoping to prompt any witnesses or acquaintances to identify them.
The loss of her eldest child has been a devastating blow for Hammond, who is struggling to comprehend the senselessness of the act. Despite her strong faith, she finds herself searching for answers and justice for her son.
Community members and law enforcement are rallying to support the investigation, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation. The case remains open, with detectives determined to bring those responsible to justice.
The Irving Police Department continues to urge anyone with information to reach out, stressing that even the smallest detail could be crucial in solving this case and bringing peace to a grieving family.
