LONG BEACH, CA – A tranquil afternoon in Heartwell Park turned into chaos when a small plane made an emergency landing, striking a woman out for a routine walk. Tiffany Harrison, 42, was enjoying the park with her dog when the unexpected incident unfolded. Harrison, who is deaf, did not hear the plane approaching, according to her mother.
Witnesses described the terrifying moment when the aircraft descended onto the park grounds. Harrison was seriously injured, suffering a fractured pelvis and multiple spinal fractures. She has undergone several surgeries, including three blood transfusions, but her condition is reported to be stable. Remarkably, her dog escaped unharmed.
The pilot, Richard A. Schleicher from Palos Verdes, also sustained injuries but is recovering in the hospital. Schleicher, a seasoned pilot with decades of experience, is a member of an experimental aircraft club in Compton. Friends noted his extensive experience, mentioning his role in teaching safety courses to fellow pilots.
Flight tracking data revealed that the plane was en route to Long Beach Airport from French Valley, having started its journey in Compton earlier that day. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the emergency landing.
Carlos Cortez, a local resident, did not witness the crash but saw the aftermath. He expressed shock at the close call, noting that the plane landed just feet from nearby homes and parkgoers. The incident has left the community shaken, with many reflecting on how swiftly normalcy can turn to danger.
Schleicher’s friends returned to the park the following morning to assist in removing the wreckage, a stark reminder of the previous day’s events. The damaged plane was carefully loaded onto a trailer, drawing onlookers and further heightening the community’s awareness of the unexpected disaster.
Tiffany’s mother remains hopeful for her daughter’s recovery, although the emotional toll of the accident is evident among family and friends. As residents await updates, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of life’s unpredictability.
