Philadelphia, Pa. – Alec Bohm’s timely sacrifice fly in the eighth inning propelled the Philadelphia Phillies to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. This win came after a remarkable performance the previous evening, where the Phillies smashed seven home runs in a 19-4 rout against the Braves.
Despite the offense being substantially quieter in this game, producing just six singles, Kyle Schwarber continued to be a pivotal figure. He contributed with a hit, a walk, and scored both runs for Philadelphia. The lack of extra-base hits didn’t hinder the team’s competitive spirit as they capitalized on their opportunities effectively.
Braves starter Bryce Elder turned in a commendable performance, yielding only one run and three hits across seven innings, but he did not earn a decision. He demonstrated impressive control, allowing two walks and striking out three batters. Atlanta’s offense was highlighted by Matt Olson, who recorded three hits, while Ozzie Albies and Nick Allen each tallied two.
After Elder departed the game, Dylan Lee stepped in as the reliever for Atlanta in the eighth. He managed to retire the first hitter but subsequently allowed Schwarber and Bryce Harper to reach base. In a critical moment, the Braves made a call to bring in Pierce Johnson, who managed to get Bohm to fly out to deep right, but Schwarber scored easily to give Philadelphia the lead.
In the ninth inning, Philadelphia closer Jhoan Duran executed flawlessly, retiring all three Atlanta batters he faced, including striking out Olson to seal the victory. This marked Duran’s 24th save of the season and his eighth since joining the Phillies.
The Braves initially struck first in the second inning. Sean Murphy’s leadoff double set the stage, and he later crossed home plate on a single from Jurickson Profar, giving Atlanta a 1-0 lead. Philadelphia starter Ranger Suarez had to navigate through challenges but managed to limit the damage effectively.
In the fourth inning, the Braves posed another threat. After a single from Nacho Alvarez Jr. and another from Allen, Suarez induced a double play from Profar, thwarting their scoring chance. This defensive stand set the foundation for the Phillies’ response in their half of the inning, as Schwarber walked and later scored thanks to a single from Brandon Marsh.
Even though Suarez allowed ten hits over five innings, he surrendered only one run while striking out two and walking one. The Philadelphia bullpen picked up the slack, with David Robertson delivering a clean sixth inning, followed by Matt Strahm who worked around two baserunners in the seventh. Orion Kerkering also contributed in the eighth, maintaining the lead for the Phillies.
As the game unfolded, the Phillies showcased resilience in the face of a strong performance by Braves pitching. This victory not only solidified their position within the competitive National League East but also highlighted the importance of clutch hitting and strategic defense in achieving close wins.
