Paterson, New Jersey – An investigation is currently underway in Paterson, New Jersey following a violent attack on two emergency medical technicians (EMTs) from the Paterson Fire Department (PFD) as they were responding to a medical call. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
The assault took place in the early morning hours of March 2, 2025, after Paterson Police officers were called to 169 16th Avenue at approximately 5:25 a.m. following reports of an aggravated assault. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the two PFD EMTs had been attacked while trying to administer medical aid to a man in need.
The EMTs had arrived at the location less than an hour prior to assist the individual experiencing breathing problems. After securing the patient to a gurney, he requested to be removed. The responders complied, but then the suspect unexpectedly became violent, allegedly assaulting both EMTs before fleeing the scene.
Both victims suffered minor injuries and were taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for treatment. Officer in Charge Patrick Murray expressed his condemnation of the attack, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding first responders who take an oath to assist those in need.
Following an investigation by the Paterson Police Major Crimes Unit, 25-year-old Darian Jackson, Jr. of Paterson was arrested on March 5, 2025. Jackson has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree crime that carries potential penalties of three to five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000.
Law enforcement officials are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack and are encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
