SEATTLE, WA – A catastrophic accident on Friday left one person dead and several others injured after a vehicle plunged from an overpass onto Interstate 5, halting traffic for hours. As investigators seek to uncover the cause, they are calling on witnesses to provide any information that might shed light on the tragic event.
The crash occurred as a driver attempted to navigate onto State Route 599. A 30-year-old man, suspected to be the driver, has been taken into custody. However, his defense team is challenging the evidence, questioning the identity of the driver and the circumstances leading to the crash.
Initial findings suggest no drugs or alcohol were involved. Instead, erratic driving behavior is believed to have set off the chain reaction that resulted in the fatal crash.
Witnesses Stefan Miller and his wife were on I-5 when they witnessed the terrifying moment the SUV descended from above. Miller described the object as a dark blur that appeared suddenly, giving them no time to react before it landed on the roadway.
According to investigators, the black Toyota Highlander struck a guardrail while merging onto State Route 599, causing it to flip over the barrier and crash onto I-5 below. This triggered a collision involving four additional vehicles and resulted in multiple ejections from the SUV, one of which was fatal.
The Washington State Patrol reports that the suspect tried to flee the scene, asserting he was not driving. In court, he faces charges including felony hit-and-run, driving with a suspended license, and failing to use a mandated ignition interlock device. However, current evidence does not support a vehicular homicide charge.
The deceased individual was reportedly driving the vehicle after picking up the suspect earlier. The suspect’s attorneys are disputing this account, suggesting possible mechanical failure or other factors might have contributed to the crash.
The Millers, who were involved in the accident, were treated at a hospital and released. Stefan Miller expressed relief that their injuries weren’t more severe, considering the potential consequences if the vehicle had landed directly on top of their car.
Out of the five vehicles involved, four were declared a total loss. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
