AUSTIN, TX – Paramedics and police rushed to the Buckshot Bar on Sixth Street early Tuesday morning after an employee reported several patrons collapsing from a suspected drug overdose. Authorities administered Narcan to five individuals, four of whom were then transported to a local hospital. Tragically, one of the victims was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Steven Tucker, a resident familiar with Austin’s nightlife, expressed his shock at the incident. “I’ve seen a lot on these streets, but five overdoses in one spot is alarming,” he said. Tucker, a recovering addict, reflected on the dangers, noting that he could have easily been one of the victims if he hadn’t turned his life around.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) is investigating whether the bar had any role in the incident. Officials are reviewing security footage and interviewing staff members. Concurrently, homicide detectives from the Austin Police Department are questioning witnesses and awaiting lab results to determine the exact substance involved.
Recent data from Austin Public Health shows a troubling rise in overdose cases, with paramedics responding to over 500 incidents between January and July of this year alone. This latest incident underscores the growing threat posed by synthetic opioids, particularly a potent drug known as Netazine.
Netazine, which has emerged as a substitute for fentanyl amid a crackdown on the latter, is more potent and sometimes resistant to Narcan, complicating emergency response efforts. The drug’s increasing presence is a significant concern for law enforcement and health officials alike.
Gray Mallister, a League City resident, shared her personal tragedy after her son died from a pill laced with Netazine. “I’m just one person trying to raise awareness,” she said, highlighting the urgent need for education and prevention efforts against this deadly substance.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and other federal agencies have been actively campaigning to inform the public about the dangers of such opioids, but awareness of Netazine remains limited.
As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the harsh realities of this growing epidemic. Authorities are urging the public to stay informed and cautious as they work to prevent further tragedies.
