Kitchener, Ontario – Waterloo Region authorities have extended an overdose alert following a recent spike in suspected drug poisoning deaths. The alert was initially issued after three overdose-related deaths were reported within a week. Subsequently, there have been five more suspected overdose-related deaths.
The Waterloo Region Integrated Drugs Strategy stated that the recent deaths occurred between March 28 and April 5, prompting concerns about the substances involved in these fatalities. Reports suggest that there is a possibility of fentanyl being mixed with other narcotics, posing a significant risk to drug users.
According to the community drug alert, the Kitchener CTS Drug Checking Program has identified samples containing various substances, including Fentanyl, new Fentanyl analogues, Bromazolam, Xylazine, Medetomidine/ Dexmedetomidine, and parafluorofentanyl. These substances have been found in batches of drugs that range in color from dark green to dark brown to light beige.
In light of these developments, individuals using drugs are strongly advised to take precautions such as never using alone, carrying naloxone at all times, and visiting the CTS on Duke Street. These preventive measures are crucial in reducing the risk of overdose and potentially saving lives in the community.
