Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A Fort Lauderdale Police officer was injured by gunfire while responding to a shooting incident at a hotel, resulting in the death of a suspect, authorities confirmed.
The incident took place in the morning at a Holiday Inn Express located in the vicinity of Southeast 17th Street and Southeast 15th Avenue. The injured officer is reported to be in stable condition, with non-life-threatening injuries.
During a press conference, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz revealed that officers were called to the hotel following reports of a person claiming to have committed a murder inside a hotel room. Upon attempting to make contact with the individual, gunfire erupted from the suspect towards the responding officers, leading to an exchange of shots.
SWAT team members subsequently entered the room where the suspect was holed up and discovered the suspect deceased. Though the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed, authorities have identified them as a local resident.
As a safety precaution, three officers directly involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental protocol. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has initiated an investigation into the incident, a standard procedure for such cases.
