Lebanon, Pennsylvania – A tragic incident unfolded last week in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where a 54-year-old man named Steven Admire was fatally shot by his 62-year-old neighbor, Duane Ulmer, in a murder-suicide just hours before Ulmer was scheduled to be evicted. The Dauphin County coroner’s office confirmed the identities of the individuals involved in the heartbreaking event that occurred on April 11 at the 500 block of S. 9th Street.
Upon responding to the scene, police discovered Admire inside his apartment with gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Admire succumbed to his injuries. Interestingly, there was a discrepancy in Admire’s age, initially reported as 55 by the police but corrected by the coroner’s office to be 54 years old.
In a disturbing turn of events, while officials were present at the scene with Admire, a fire broke out in a neighboring apartment occupied by Ulmer. Firefighters were able to contain the flames, only to find Ulmer deceased inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was noted that Ulmer had not made any preparations for the imminent eviction, indicating a lack of intention to vacate the premises voluntarily.
Authorities revealed that Ulmer’s eviction stemmed from a history of disruptive behavior in the building, involving numerous incidents requiring police intervention. Despite living in the apartment complex for an extended period, Ulmer had a track record of confrontations with the landlord and neighbors, non-payment of rent, and refusal to cooperate with maintenance. Additionally, Ulmer declined mental health services and assistance from social services, displaying a pattern of uncooperative and hostile behavior.
Located behind Rudy’s Locksmith at 544 South 9th Street, the seven-door apartment building served as the backdrop for this tragic event. The coroner’s office announced that Admire’s autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the senseless loss of life in the close-knit community of Lebanon.
