Murders of Unhoused Victims, Including Former NFL Lineman Kevin Johnson, Spark Urgent Investigation in South Los Angeles

Los Angeles, California – Authorities are investigating a series of homicides involving unhoused individuals, including former NFL lineman Kevin Johnson, whose death has drawn considerable attention. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that four individuals were discovered deceased in the Willowbrook neighborhood over a span of three months.

The victims were found in homeless encampments along East 120th Street, with the timeline of deaths ranging from October 2025 to January 2026. As detectives began to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatalities, it became apparent that Johnson, 55, a former athlete who played professionally in the 1990s, was among the deceased.

According to the county’s medical examiner, Johnson succumbed to blunt head trauma and stab wounds, having been found unconscious at the site. His passing has not only stunned his family but also raised concerns about safety and violence within the homeless community in Los Angeles.

Branden Johnson, Kevin’s son, expressed profound grief over his father’s death, emphasizing the void it has created in his life. He painted a picture of his father as a loving and supportive figure who maintained daily contact, checking in on his family and offering words of encouragement. The younger Johnson described his father as a beacon of joy and kindness, highlighting his ability to uplift those around him, regardless of challenges.

“He possessed a rare ability to make people feel valued and cherished,” Branden said. “My father’s warmth could brighten even the darkest days, and his spirit will continue to influence everyone he encountered.”

Kevin Johnson was drafted by the New England Patriots in 1993 and later played for several teams, including the Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles. His career on the field showcased his athletic talent, but it is his legacy as a father and friend that resonates deeply with those who knew him.

As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to release details regarding the identities of the other three victims. Detectives are collaborating with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to gather information and identify potential suspects involved in the case.

Law enforcement officials urge anyone with information to reach out to the sheriff’s department’s homicide bureau. The string of deaths has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by the homeless population and the urgent need for protective measures and resources.
