Queens, N.Y. — An elderly couple was brutally murdered in their home Monday morning in what has been described as a shocking and brutal crime. Frank and Maureen Olton, both in their seventies, were reportedly subjected to hours of violence before their deaths, leading to widespread outrage and concern for public safety in the community.
Authorities have charged 42-year-old Jamel McGriff, a repeat offender with a lengthy criminal history, with multiple serious offenses, including first-degree murder and armed robbery. The Queens District Attorney, Melinda Katz, stated that McGriff allegedly forced his way into the Oltons’ home under the pretense of needing to charge his phone.
On the day of the incident, surveillance footage reportedly showed McGriff initially approaching another residence but was turned away. He then gained entry to the Oltons’ property, where he was later seen leaving more than five hours later with bags in hand. The gruesome discovery came when firefighters responded to a fire at the Oltons’ home, where they found Maureen suffering from severe burns and Frank bound and stabbed in the basement.
The couple’s son, who is an emergency medical technician, received a security alert about the fire and promptly contacted emergency services. The response team found the scene devastating, with evidence of violence and arson. Maureen was discovered in the living room, and Frank was found in a more secluded area of the house. Fires had been set on both levels of the home.
District Attorney Katz expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, highlighting the profound impact this double homicide has had on the community. “This is an appalling crime that has shaken not just the Olton family but the whole city,” Katz remarked. She emphasized that McGriff faces life in prison if convicted.
Moreover, after allegedly committing the murders, McGriff reportedly used the couple’s stolen credit cards for purchases at a retail store and sold their mobile phones utilizing his own identification, revealing a disturbing pattern of calculated criminal behavior.
McGriff was taken into custody by law enforcement in Manhattan later in the week. His extensive criminal history includes several serious offenses, raising questions about previous interventions and preventive measures within the justice system.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Frank and Maureen Olton, whose lives were cut short by an act of senseless violence. Local residents have expressed their fears regarding safety in the neighborhood, calling attention to the need for community vigilance and stronger preventive measures.
The couple, described by neighbors as friendly and well-liked, had been enjoying their quiet life in Bellerose before the tragic events unfolded. The loss of their lives has prompted conversations about the vulnerabilities elderly residents face and the alarming reality of violence in what many perceive as a safe neighborhood.
