LONDON, England — A man has been convicted of murder in the death of Okechukwu Iweha, who was fatally stabbed in Tottenham last year. Devon Brown, 30, was found guilty by a jury at the Old Bailey, while his accomplice, Leandro Kaienga, 29, was convicted of perverting the course of justice.
The incident occurred on April 7, 2024, when police were alerted to an unresponsive man on Northumberland Park. Emergency responders performed CPR and utilized a defibrillator, but Iweha was pronounced dead approximately one hour later. A post-mortem examination revealed that a stab wound to the chest was the cause of death.
Footage presented during the trial depicted Brown aggressively confronting Iweha on Worcester Avenue, believing he had stolen a bicycle. After stopping the victim, Brown brandished a large knife and stabbed him multiple times while Kaienga stood nearby. The two men then left Iweha on the ground and disposed of the murder weapon and their clothing in a nearby bin before incinerating them.
Despite their attempts to hide evidence, forensic investigators quickly collected DNA from a vehicle touched by Brown and obtained clear CCTV footage that helped secure a murder charge against him. Following the murder, Brown fled to Dallas, Texas, but was apprehended by authorities and extradited back to the UK.
Kaienga was arrested in Croydon on April 22, 2024, a few days after the murder, and faced charges of both murder and perverting the course of justice. In the trial, the jury found him not guilty of murder but guilty of his involvement in concealing the crime.
Detective Inspector Mark Johnson, who oversaw the investigation, expressed satisfaction over the verdict, highlighting the relentless efforts of the investigating officers to achieve justice for Iweha and his family. He emphasized the devastating impact of knife crime, remarking on the need for ongoing efforts to reduce violence in London.
Both Brown and Kaienga are slated to be sentenced on December 19.
