LOS ANGELES — Nick Reiner, the son of noted actor and director Rob Reiner, appeared in court Wednesday facing two charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents. The 32-year-old, seen shackled and wearing a suicide prevention smock, did not enter a plea during his initial appearance from a secured custody area.
The arraignment has been rescheduled to January 7 at the request of Reiner’s attorney, who represented him briefly in court. When asked about the date, Reiner responded affirmatively, acknowledging the judge’s comments.
Reiner was charged earlier this week after his parents, Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered dead in their Brentwood home, allegedly from stab wounds. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed the details, revealing additional charges of multiple murders and the use of a dangerous weapon, which may lead to harsher penalties. The district attorney stated that a decision regarding pursuing the death penalty is still pending.
“This tragedy resonates deeply not just within the Reiner family but throughout our entire community,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell. Hochman voiced similar sentiments, referring to the loss as “beyond tragic” and committing to seeking justice for the victims.
Nick Reiner, who was taken into custody in Exposition Park, approximately 14 miles from the crime scene, did not resist arrest. Family and friends expressed their sorrow over the couple’s deaths, highlighting their contributions to the community and their advocacy for various causes.
Rob Reiner was widely recognized for his role in the classic sitcom “All in the Family,” as well as for directing beloved films such as “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Princess Bride.” His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was known as a skilled photographer and a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. The couple shared 36 years of marriage.
In a heartfelt statement released by their close friends, including notable entertainers such as Billy Crystal and Martin Short, they described the couple as a “special force” whose dynamic presence inspired many. “We are heartbroken and will miss them forever,” their statement said.
Nick Reiner was initially scheduled for a court appearance earlier in the week, but this was delayed for medical reasons, according to his lawyer, Alan Jackson. At Wednesday’s hearing, it was uncertain whether he would enter a plea or face further delays due to the previous medical issues.
Reiner remains in custody without bail. Alan Jackson, his defense attorney, is known for handling high-profile cases, including that of Harvey Weinstein. On the prosecution side, Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian has significant experience, having worked on cases involving the Menendez brothers and Robert Durst.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not disclosed any potential motives behind the alleged murders, leaving many questions unanswered in the wake of this tragedy.
