VASS, N.C. — A 25-year-old man awaits arraignment in Ohio after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, a Ukrainian refugee, and her boyfriend in a tragic incident that unfolded on Valentine’s Day. Caleb Fosnaugh is charged with the murders of Kateryna Tovmash, 21, and 28-year-old Fort Bragg soldier Matthew Wade at Tovmash’s mother’s home early on February 14.
Investigators report that Fosnaugh fled the scene and returned to his hometown in Ohio following the shootings. He was apprehended by law enforcement on Saturday without bond pending further legal proceedings.
In the wake of the tragedy, friends of Tovmash have shared their heartbreak and memories, highlighting her vibrant spirit and the joy she brought to those around her. Kirill Pryshchepchuk, a childhood friend, took to social media to honor Tovmash, emphasizing that her violent death was unfathomable.
“That was not supposed to happen. That’s not normal in this world,” he expressed, recalling their last meeting in Philadelphia, where Tovmash had shared her life updates, revealing her happiness and aspirations.
Tovmash, who was known affectionately as Kate, fled war-torn Ukraine, leaving behind her homeland in search of a better life. Her family eventually joined her, seeking safety and stability. Tovmash was passionate about music, photography, and was actively involved in caring for her younger siblings, a role she cherished deeply.
“She was always ready to help her mom and lend a hand with the kids,” Pryshchepchuk remembered. “She was like a natural caretaker.” Tragically, her nurturing spirit was on display the morning of her death when she was babysitting her youngest siblings.
The circumstances surrounding Tovmash’s death are particularly harrowing; a six-year-old brother witnessed the violence unfold. Family and friends are grappling with the profound loss, which has left an entire community in mourning.

Tovmash’s commitment to her faith as a devout Mormon was evident throughout her life. Although her father and brothers currently reside in Utah, they intend to bring her home for burial.
